This benefit is provided when single mothers take designated education or training courses
- Higher vocational training promotion benefit:
This benefit is provided when single mothers enroll in vocational training institutions for more than two years to receive licenses or qualifications as nurses, children’s nurses, beauticians etc.

| Please go to the department of obstetrics and gynecology in a hospital as soon as you begin to show any sign of pregnancy. If your pregnancy is confirmed, please notify the Tottori City Health Center or the Citizen's Affairs, Health and Welfare Division at your nearest Tottori City Branch Office and you will be eligible for the following services. |
Issuance of the health handbook for mothers and babies (Boshi-kenkotecho)
| The Boshi-kenkotecho is a health handbook that contains important records of the mother's health condition during pregnancy and childbirth, the results of medical check-ups as well as the baby's growth record and vaccination history. Please keep it in a safe place and make sure it is always up to date. The handbook also provides a lot of information on pregnancy, childbirth, and child rearing. |
Issuance of a health checkup tickets for expectant mothers (Ninpu-ippankenkoshinsa-jushinhyo)
| The health checkup tickets need to be submitted to your nearest medical institution in order to take regular health check-ups for disease prevention and early detection for expectant mothers and babies. It is issued together with the health handbook. |

Baby Visiting Service (Akachan-homon)
| About one month after childbirth a midwife or health nurse will visit your home to provide health advice for you and your baby. Please submit the Baby visiting service form (Akachan-homon-hyo), which you received together with the health handbook (Boshi-kenkotecho), and the birth notification to the Tottori City Citizen's Division or the Citizen's Welfare Division at a Tottori City Branch Office. |

Maternity Benefit (Shussan-Ikuji Ichijikin)

In order to provide financial support for giving birth,
Shussan-Ikuji Ichijikin can be paid directly to your hospital from your medical insurer.
If you do not wish the benefit to be paid directly to your hospital, it can be paid to you after
giving birth. (In that case, please pay in cash at your hospital directly.) When providing the maternity benefit, you and your hospital will be given an explanation of about the benefit and you will be asked whether you wish the benefit to be paid to your hospital. If you wish to do so, you will exchange two copies of the "benefit application and agreement to have the medical institution receive the benefit payment" document. Then, your hospital will charge the expense for giving birth to a payment institution. The difference between the maternity benefit and the actual medical costs for giving birth have to be borne by (or can be paid to) you. |

You must notify the Citizen's Division of your baby's birth within 14 days.
If your baby is going to stay in Japan for 60 days or longer after birth, you must register your baby as an alien.
Please also notify your embassy. The following documents are necessary.

Child Allowance
| The child allowance is provided to those who are bringing up children until the child finishes elementary school (the first March 31 following the child’s 12th birth day) However, there are restrictions depending on income. To obtain child allowance, an application is necessary. |

Child Support Allowance
| Should the mother due divorce or the father's physical/mental disability or death be unable to sustain the previous livelihood, child support allowance is provided to those mothers (or the person taking care of the children) for children until the first May 31 following the children’s 18th birthday or until the 20th birthday in case of disabled children. There are restrictions depending on the income. |
Allowance for children orphaned by disasters
| This allowance is provided for children who have lost their parents or guardians due to traffic accidents or natural disasters or whose parents or guardians are severely disabled. The allowance is provided until the children complete compulsory education. To obtain this allowance, a certification is necessary. |
Loans for fatherless families and widows
| This loan is intended to promote child welfare and the economic independence of single mother families or widows. Necessary expenses (school fees, school enrollment fees, expenses for finishing technical learning, funds for employment preparation) are provided as small or no interest loans. |
Small welfare loans for single mother families
| This is a small loan for single mother families or widows. |
Elementary or junior high school enrollment subsidy for single parent families
| This subsidy is provided for single parent families when the children enroll in elementary or junior high school. Income tax payers and those receiving welfare are not eligible. An application must be made to receive this subsidy. |
